Newsweek

The Challenge

Newsweek.com provides in-depth analysis, news, and opinion on world issues, technology, business, culture, and politics. The primary mission was to create simple and empowering interactions that offer a fluid and engaging experience across platforms.

Goals

  • Redefine the brand mission, editorial objectives, and target audience to align with current market trends and audience interests.
  • Develop a comprehensive content strategy that leverages diverse content types (news, features, opinions, etc.), media formats (articles, videos, live streams, podcasts, and more), and a well-organized topical taxonomy.
  • Build an engaging user experience centered around branded properties and related content, fostering higher engagement and increased ad views.
  • Define key performance indicators (KPIs) focused on building a deeply engaged, endemic audience.
  • Enhance the social media presence by leveraging Newsweek Media’s publishing platform to drive higher audience engagement.
  • Innovate new advertising models, including branded content and native advertising, to diversify revenue streams.
  • Expand reach by launching on alternative news platforms, such as Google AMP and Apple News.
  • Develop comprehensive relaunch and go-to-market plans, including redesign, platform strategy, business plans, and marketing plans.

Interaction Design

Delivering a best-in-class, engaging news experience was the top priority for the relaunch of this iconic brand. The product team worked within a truly agile process, keeping the strategy in focus, crafting an outstanding user experience, developing new content categories, and completely re-envisioning advertising models. We created efficiencies, validated concepts through prototyping and user testing, and developed platform architecture and technology innovations—all while maintaining a focus on seamless content delivery and relevance.

Mobile

With a detailed understanding of our core users, we knew that mobile platforms needed to be the starting point for the user experience design. The entire experience was designed in a modular fashion, allowing for custom layouts and promotions, and the mobile design was adapted to larger screens, creating a truly platform-agnostic approach to the product’s overall design.

User Experience & Testing

Wireframes with simulated rich media and editorial content were generated throughout the design process, allowing us to make accurate design decisions quickly without disrupting project flow. User testing was conducted both remotely and in focus groups at testing facilities, using low- and high-fidelity prototypes. Findings were evaluated, and interactions were adjusted and incorporated into the final designs. Comprehensive wireframes were created to simulate all desktop and mobile advertising scenarios and further tested through live A/B testing.
